What is a Doula?
Origins
Doula is an ancient Greek word meaning a woman who serves, and that is exactly what we do. Since the dawn of time community members would attend each other's birth lending helping hands, knowledge and comfort to the birthing person. In the 60’s we saw the contemporary role emerge with the rise of the unmedicated low intervention birth movement having those birthing people ask their friends and family with formal or practical knowledge about childbirth to provide them with support during pregnancy. We still fill the same non medical support roles now just updated to modern needs.
Modern Doulas
Doulas are non medical parts of your care team. I'm here to offer education, advocacy as well as physical and emotional support. From questions, venting, birth plans, setting up the nursery, to helping you switch positions and breathe through contractions in labor, then lending a helping hand around the house after baby is here. I’m with you every step of the way!
My Philosophy
I believe that birth is an amazing transition and with all transitions in life we have to meet them making the best choices to get through to the new stage. Every gestational person and family deserves individualized, educational trauma-informed care that leads them through their journey in the best way for them. Birth and Postpartum is full of grey areas and holding that many things can be true at once, my care leaves space for it all through every chat, visit, and through your labor experience.
I’m deeply committed to Intersectionality, inclusivity, accessibility, and anti-oppression not just as values but as pillars I draw from in every aspect of how I show up for you.
